Prince
Albert via
Swartberg Pass
Explore
the world-renowned Swartberg Pass by traveling to Prince Albert
and back. The ecological and geological riches of this world
renowned pass are matched by the impressive “dry-stone” techniques
used by master engineer Thomas Bain when he constructed the
Swartberg Pass, completing it in 1886. A light lunch at the
little Karoo town of Prince Albert (named after Queen Victoria’s
husband) is followed by a tour of the town and region, discovering
its early roots and history, paying a visit to an olive farm.
Circular
Route via
Prince Albert & Meiringspoort
After
exploring the Swartberg Pass, guests are introduced to the
arid Great Karoo landscape and its diverse succulents and karroid
bush by skirting the northern slopes of the Swartberg Mountains
en- route to Meiringspoort. Time is spent at the 60 meter high
waterfall in Meiringspoort, before snaking through the rest
of the poort to the peaceful Little Karoo “Dorpie” -
De Rust. From here we travel past Dysselsdorp - originally
a mission station for the khoi-tribe living in the area – and
then via Oudtshoorn to our destination.
A
day visit to the historically renowned Gamkaskloof
Experience
the unique opportunity to “step back in time”. This
4 x 4 exploration takes you via the Swartberg Pass down into
the Gamkaskloof, also known as “The Hell”. You can
experience the tranquility of this secluded “kloof” that
were, for nearly a century, home to a small community that lived
in isolation from the “outside world”. Traditional “Kloof” meals
are prepared by the Joubert- family who are the only remaining
remnant of the original “Klowers”. Annatjie Joubert
was brought up in the Gamkaskloof and with her family they will
treat you with stories and delicacies from a bygone era.
